Letās be real⦠getting your kids to smile naturally in front of the camera can feel like trying to herd catsāon roller skates. š As a Phoenix family photographer (and mom of four myself!), Iāve seen it allāfrom goofy giggles to full-on meltdowns. And through it all, Iāve learned a few tried-and-true tricks to make those real, joy-filled smiles shine through in every family session.
If youāre dreaming of pictures where your little ones look happy and actually like themselves, this post is for you!
Whether youāre planning to hire a pro or snap a few photos yourself, here are 5 super simple (and fun!) tips to help your kids smile naturally during your next photo session.
1. Donāt Ask Them to PoseāJust Be Candid šø
(Tip from your favorite Phoenix family photographer)

One of the biggest mistakes I see parents make is asking their kids to āsmileā or āstand still.ā But hereās the thing: kids arenāt modelsātheyāre movers, gigglers, explorers, and little bundles of unpredictable joy!
Instead of stiff poses, I like to let kids be themselves. During my sessions, I often play games, let them run, spin, or even have races. When theyāre having fun, the smiles come naturally.
š” Try This:
Let your kids explore the space, whisper something funny in their ear, or ask them to show you their silliest dance move. Candid always beats posed!

2. Tell Silly Jokes or Get a Little Goofy š¤Ŗ
(Because laughter = real smiles!)

This one works like magicāand itās one of my favorite parts of a photo session! Sometimes Iāll tell the corniest knock-knock jokes or pretend I forgot how to say ācheese.ā Kids LOVE it when adults act silly.
When I photograph your family, Iām not afraid to pull a funny face or start a game of Simon Says. That instant connection leads to genuine laughterāand those are the moments youāll want to remember forever.
š Some of my go-to silly prompts:
- āWhatās the grossest thing you ever ate?ā
- āPretend youāre a T-Rex eating spaghetti!ā
- āSay āstinky feetā instead of cheese!ā
š· Remember, photography isnāt about perfectionāitās about connection. And laughter is one of the best connectors there is!
3. Let Them Know Itās Okay Not to Smile š
(Yes, reallyātrust me on this one!)

I know it sounds strange coming from a Phoenix family photographer, but not forcing a smile is often the secret to getting one. Kids can feel pressure when theyāre constantly told to smile, and sometimes that results in those awkward, tight-lipped, āplease help meā kind of grins. š¬
Instead, tell your kids itās okay to just relax and be themselves. When they feel seen and not judged, they loosen upāand those sweet, natural smiles start to sneak out.
⨠Try saying:
- āJust look at me like youāre thinking about ice cream.ā
- āYou donāt have to smile unless you want to.ā
- āWanna do a serious face? Letās see who can hold it the longest!ā
š¬ Fun fact: Some of my favorite family portraits are of kids just being thoughtful, curious, or even a little shy. Those moments are pure gold. š
4. Get Moving! Dance, Jump, Spin, and Play šŗ
(From a pro photographer who never stands still!)

Photoshoots shouldnāt feel like sitting through school picture day circa 1992. (Raise your hand if you still remember those blue backgrounds and awkward grins! šāāļø)
In my sessions, weāre always on the move. Movement creates energy, and energy creates joyāand joyful movement often turns into the BEST photos.
š Try these fun movement ideas:
- Ring-around-the-rosie
- Jumping contests
- Twirls and spins (especially cute with dresses!)
- Running toward or away from the camera
Kids are happiest when theyāre doing, not just standing. Plus, movement gives those beautiful flowy clothes some lifeājust one reason why I recommend outfits like these for your photo session.
5. Bring Something They Love š§ø
(A secret weapon in natural smiles!)
Is your little one obsessed with their stuffed dinosaur? Canāt go anywhere without that sparkly unicorn headband? BRING IT.

Incorporating something meaningfulāwhether itās a toy, book, or even a snack (yes, fruit snacks totally count!)ācan help kids feel comfortable and relaxed during a session. And when theyāre relaxed, those genuine smiles come out like sunshine.
š Ideas to pack in your photo bag:
- A favorite small toy or lovey
- Bubbles (kids LOVE bubbles)
- Snacks + water (seriously, a hungry kid = a grumpy kid)
- A change of clothes (for spills, grass stains, or just in case)
Plus, personal touches help tell your familyās unique storyāand thatās what these photos are really all about, right?
Final Thoughts š¬
