How long have you been a photographer and what was the main reason you started?

8 years! I was laid off from my “steady” day job and had to figure out a way to replace my income to support my family. I loved photography so I figured it was worth a shot!

What (who) are your favorite types of subjects to shoot and why?

I adore photographing high school seniors and brand photography primarily because it allows me to connect with individuals on a one on one basis and really get to know them.

Canon vs. Nikon (or other) which one are you? Any specific reason why?

Canon! That’s what I started on because it was more comfortable for me to hold.

What is your go to lens?

hands down 70-200!

If you could only give 1 piece of advice to a new photographer out there, what would it be?

One of the best ways to accelerate your growth is to be mentored by someone who has what you want! So whether that’s wanting to learn how to use off camera flash, editing techniques, pricing or marketing, find someone who is successful at what you want to do and learn from me!

If I gave you $1000 right now (or maybe more) to spend on photography gear, what would you buy?

Oh great question! I’d buy a new 50 1.2.

Do you have any secret tips for getting people to loosen up/smile during a shoot?

Yes! Connect with them on a personal level before you pull out your camera! When you take a few extra minutes before a session starts to talk to your clients about how their day is, their family and even just what the flow of the session will look like, it can ease their nerves.

Who is your inspiration?

My children Aiden & Nathaniel.

If you could photograph any person (dead or alive) who would that be?

Hard question. This may not technically be the answer you’re looking for, but I would photograph the street kids in Calcutta India again. I had the honor of traveling to India last year in partnership with an organization that takes kids off the streets, provides clean clothes, food, water, education and teaches them about the love of Jesus. I photographed the organization’s work to update their website and provide images to the children’s sponsors. In spite of the language barrier, photographing the kids was one of the biggest highlights of the trip. They loved seeing how they looked not he back of my camera and the loved being pretending to be models. The smiles and laughter was contagious. It was a day I’ll never forget and one that I look forward to doing again!
