LOCATIONS AREN’T EVERYTHING-BEGIN WITH YOUR FINAL PICTURE IN MIND
I get asked often by other photographers in the Phoenix area for help with the location of where I take my pictures. While I know that some photographers keep their locations a secret, most of the time, I really don’t mind sharing. The majority of the places I shoot at are public places and free for anyone to use or take pictures at. There is no hidden place I know of where all the pictures you take with your camera are going to turn out perfect. I don’t mind giving away the spots I do my sessions at because I know that different photographers pictures will not look the same as mine. We all interpret areas differently and have a different outcome in our head for what the final photo will look like. I’ve gotten several requests about the location of this photo that I recently posted on my Facebook page, so I decided to do a pull back shot which is something I haven’t done before. I think this clearly shows how it’s not always about the locations, but about the photographer and his or her vision.
The first two photos are obviously my final work, but if you scroll down to the bottom shot, that is exactly where we were. These two photos were taken in a parking lot- that’s right- a parking lot. We stepped out of the car and I saw some bushes with pretty purple flowers on them. You can see them to the left of the pull back shot- they’re nothing really special, but I loved the color of them. I placed my subject so he was facing away from the sunset hoping to catch some yellow and orange which would compliment the purple flowers. I them composed the shot so the bushes framed him.
I’m pretty sure that if you put several different photographers in this parking lot, you’d have many, many different results of what their pictures would look like. I bet many wouldn’t even choose a parking lot for their photos. That is why I give out my locations most of the time and I think that some of the times, other photographer don’t believe me when I disclose my “secret” spots:) I also hope this helps my clients see that my vision for the photograph might end up looking much better than what they see on the surface.

Love how you are so kind to your fellow photogs! You’ve really shown that it doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have, how much you’ve spent on your props, or where you are – it’s the person behind the camera! Phoenix is lucky to have you!!
Stunning! The colour and the Phoenix location is just perfect, even though it’s in a nondescript parking lot. Love that you used a pull back shot. And the little child is super cute. great work from a great Phoenix, Arizona Child Photographer
