The Location

The Hole in the Rock at Papago Park is a favorite photo spot for many.  It truly captures the feel of Arizona with it’s red rock mountains and desert landscape all around.  This spot is located right in central Phoenix so it is an easy drive to wherever you are located in the Phoenix Valley.  In addition to the mountains at this location, Papago Park also has many palm trees and a lake close by.  This can provide great variety for your family photo session.

The Hike: How to Prepare

The Hole in the Rock at Papago Park is a mountain and does require some mild to moderate hiking.  For the front, it looks a lot more intimidating than it actually is.  This mountain has a hiking path that wraps around the mountain and continues on with natural stone steps making it a pretty easy climb for even the youngest family member.  I’ve taken my own 2 year old on this hike as well as women 9 months pregnant for their maternity session.  So the hike can be done!  Even though it is a mild hike, if you do have someone in your family with limited mobility this would not be an ideal option. ( I do know of many other wonderful spots to with no climbing involved!)  

The Colors

Because the mountain is strongly characterized by the color red/orange, your choice of wardrobe color is important.  Complementing colors to red and orange are green and blue.  When planning you family portrait session for this location, keep that in mind when selecting the outfits you will wear.  Shades and patterns of blues and greens will look great with this background and really bring out the mountain colors too!
