The Best Parks in Phoenix for a Family Picnic (and Pictures!) 🧺📸

Ahwatukee Children's Photographer

Living in Phoenix means sunny skies, stunning desert landscapes, and so many beautiful parks to explore with your kids. Whether you’re packing sandwiches and juice boxes or planning a big family picnic, there are tons of spots across the Valley that are not only great for relaxing and playing—but also perfect for snapping some gorgeous family photos.

As a Phoenix family photographer (and mom of four!), I’m always scouting places where families can both make memories and capture them. So if you’re on the hunt for the perfect picnic spot and a place for your next family photo session, I’ve got you covered. ☀️

Let’s take a look at some of the best parks in Phoenix for a family picnic and pictures!

🌄 Papago Park

If you’ve never been to Papago Park, it’s a Phoenix must. With its red rock buttes, palm trees, and wide-open spaces, this place looks straight out of a travel magazine. It’s super family-friendly too—with shady picnic areas, easy trails, and even the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden nearby.

Why it’s great for a picnic:
There are covered ramadas, grassy areas near the pond, and lots of space for kids to run around.

Why it’s perfect for photos:
The iconic Hole-in-the-Rock, desert plants, and golden-hour lighting here make it one of the most popular places for family photography in Phoenix. The natural backdrop adds a little magic to every photo.

📸 Pro tip: Schedule your session about an hour before sunset for that dreamy, warm glow. Here’s why golden hour is the best time for photos.

🌳 Granada Park

Tucked between the Biltmore and Arcadia neighborhoods, Granada Park is a hidden gem. It’s got picnic tables, a small lake, and big grassy areas—plus views of Camelback Mountain in the distance!

Why it’s great for a picnic:
Bring a blanket, sit by the water, and enjoy the ducks swimming by. There’s also a playground for younger kiddos to burn off some energy.

Why it’s perfect for photos:
The lake reflection, tall green trees, and soft light in the early morning or late afternoon make this a peaceful, beautiful place for pictures.

🏞️ Dreamy Draw Recreation Area

With a name like Dreamy Draw, you know it’s going to be good! Located just off the 51 freeway, this desert park feels like a little getaway from the city.

Why it’s great for a picnic:
There are picnic spots scattered throughout, and several easy hiking trails that are great for families with kids of all ages.

Why it’s perfect for photos:
You’ll get cactus, mountains, and golden desert tones—everything you’d want in a natural Phoenix family photo. Plus, the wide trails mean kids can safely explore while I snap candid shots.

📍 Bonus: It’s less crowded than some of the bigger parks, so you’ll feel like you have your own little slice of desert paradise.

🏜️ Desert Foothills Park (Ahwatukee)

This Ahwatukee favorite is a go-to for locals and a sweet spot for casual weekends outdoors. It’s clean, open, and has tons of space for both picnicking and play.

Why it’s great for a picnic:
There’s a shaded playground, sports fields, and grassy areas that are ideal for a picnic blanket and snacks. Plenty of shade trees make this spot comfy even on warmer days.

Why it’s perfect for photos:
Between the trees, mountain backdrop, and soft, open lighting, Desert Foothills Park gives off a peaceful, community vibe that shows beautifully in family portraits.

🌅 Encanto Park

Encanto Park is right in the heart of Phoenix and has that nostalgic charm you don’t find everywhere. With a lagoon, old-fashioned paddle boats, and palm-lined paths, it’s the perfect blend of city and nature.

Why it’s perfect for photos:
The water, bridges, and mature palm trees make for super versatile photo spots. You’ll get a more classic park look, perfect for timeless family portraits.

Why it’s great for a picnic:
Tons of shaded tables, calm water views, and a playground make this a total win for families. You can even rent pedal boats for a little post-lunch adventure!

Encanto Park is a fun spot to take photos if you have young children.

🌿 Gilbert Riparian Preserve

If you’re on the east side of town, the Riparian Preserve is a treasure. Located in Gilbert, it’s both an educational spot and a nature lover’s dream.

Why it’s great for a picnic:
There are walking paths, shaded benches, and lots of areas to explore with the kids—including a pond, ducks, and a cool observatory.

Why it’s perfect for photos:
This place has everything: tall grasses, desert trails, water, bridges, and even a few forest-like spots. It’s one of the most diverse and scenic spots for a family photo session in the Valley.
