Looking for a way to enjoy the great outdoors with your kids and sneak in a little quality time? Hiking in Phoenix is the perfect family activity! Not only is it an awesome way to get out of the house, burn off energy, and explore the desert, but many of these trails also double as stunning backdrops for a quick family photo session 📸😉.
As a Phoenix family photographer (and mom of four!), I’m always scouting the best spots where adventure and beautiful scenery go hand in hand. So I’ve rounded up 10 of the best kid-friendly hikes in Phoenix—easy, fun, and picture-perfect!
1. Hole-in-the-Rock – Papago Park
This one’s a Phoenix classic! Just a short walk from the parking lot, Hole-in-the-Rock offers a fun rock formation your kids can climb and explore, with sweeping city views at the top.
📸 Photo Tip: Sunset here is gorgeous, with soft golden light filtering through the rock opening. A quick family photo here is always a win!

2. Telegraph Pass – South Mountain
Located in the Ahwatukee area, Telegraph Pass is a moderate trail with a steady incline—great for slightly older kids or little ones in hiking backpacks. You’ll get awesome views of the city and desert landscape.
🧗 Tip: Bring water and snacks. It’s a great spot for a rest break and some scenic photos near the summit!

3. Pima Canyon Trailhead
Also part of South Mountain, the Pima Canyon Trailhead has multiple trails branching off, but the beginning section is mostly flat and easy for kids. Plus, it’s full of saguaro cacti, desert flora, and wide-open skies.
📷 Bonus: This trailhead is one of my favorite places for family photography in Phoenix—the desert light is unbeatable. Check out my family portfolio here!

4. Gilbert Riparian Preserve
Okay, technically not a “hike,” but this spot has plenty of easy walking trails and lots to discover—wildflowers, ponds, turtles, and even a little observatory! It’s perfect for toddlers or stroller walks.

📸 Photo Moment: The water reflections and tall grasses make for dreamy photo settings.

5. Judith Tunnell Accessible Trail – South Mountain

👶 Mom Hack: It’s shaded in spots, so perfect for early mornings with babies or toddlers.
6. Gateway Loop – McDowell Sonoran Preserve
Located in Scottsdale, this trail is a little longer, but it’s still doable with older kids who love to explore. The landscape is full of interesting rocks, cacti, and mountain views.
🌄 Tip: Bring a picnic and take a break mid-trail—it’s the perfect way to turn hiking into a mini family outing.

7. Double Butte Loop – Papago Park
A fun and scenic loop, Double Butte Trail lets you explore the iconic red rocks of Papago Park without too much effort. It’s short, mostly flat, and packed with interesting geology.

This lesser-known spot has lots of short trail options, making it ideal for choosing-your-own-adventure with little ones. The scenery is peaceful and beautiful year-round.

9. Lookout Mountain Trail
This hike starts out fairly easy, though it gets steeper at the top—perfect for families with kids who want a bit of a challenge. The panoramic views from the top are totally worth it!
