A peaceful nature setting that’s picture perfect — with just a few things to plan for!

If you’re thinking about scheduling your family photo session at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, you are in for a treat! This gorgeous desert oasis is full of greenery, bridges, water, wildlife, and winding trails that make it such a unique backdrop — especially for families who want a more natural, relaxed vibe.
As a Phoenix family photographer who’s shot here many times, I’ve learned a few things that can help your session run smoother. Here’s what you need to know before heading out to the Preserve with your crew (and maybe a toddler in tow 😉).
🗓️ Weekdays and Summer = Way Less Crowded
The Riparian Preserve is a popular photo location, especially in the fall and spring months — and for good reason! But if you want a little more space and privacy (and don’t want to wait your turn for the best photo spots), I highly recommend scheduling:
- A weekday session (evenings are great!)
- A summer session — yes, even in Arizona! Golden hour helps with the heat, and the location is much quieter.
Fewer people means a more relaxed experience for you and your family — and more freedom for me to get creative with locations and lighting.

🚗 Parking Can Be Tricky — Here’s Where to Go
One thing families are often surprised by: parking isn’t right at the entrance to the Preserve.
The best and most convenient place to park is:
👉 The Southeast Regional Library parking lot (right next door!)
From there, it’s just a short walk to the preserve trails. Be sure to arrive a few minutes early, especially if you’ve got little ones or need time to wrangle everyone together (you know how that goes 😄).

👣 There Is Some Walking Involved
The trails here are beautiful — but they’re also a bit spread out. If anyone in your group has mobility concerns or if you’re bringing young kids, strollers, or grandparents, it’s good to know that:
- You’ll be doing a little walking to get to the best photo spots
- The paths are wide and mostly flat, but not paved
- Strollers with big wheels do best here (umbrella strollers, not so much)
- Bring water in warmer months — there’s not much shade!
I’ll guide you to the best locations with the shortest walk possible, but comfy shoes (at least to start) are always a win!

💦 There’s a Large Pond — So Keep Little Ones Close
The Preserve features a large, beautiful pond that makes for stunning sunset shots — but if you’ve got a little one who loves to run (or can’t resist a splash), you’ll want to keep a close eye.
- The pond is open and unfenced
- I’ll never shoot too close unless you’re comfortable
- There are plenty of other gorgeous spots farther from the water
Safety always comes first, so we’ll work together to keep the experience calm and fun for everyone.

🐦 Wildlife & Nature Everywhere (So Much for Kids to See!)
This spot isn’t just pretty — it’s full of cool surprises that make kids curious and engaged during sessions.
You might see:
- Ducks and geese by the water
- Turtles sunning themselves on logs
- Birds flying through reeds
- Bunnies hopping through the brush
I love using these natural moments to capture your kids being themselves — pointing, laughing, watching. It adds so much personality to your session!

🌅 Golden Hour Is Best (As Always!)
Like most outdoor locations, the Riparian Preserve is at its most magical during golden hour — the 60–90 minutes before sunset.
Why it’s the best:
- Soft, warm light
- Fewer harsh shadows
- That golden glow on the water = swoon-worthy!
I’ll help you schedule the ideal time based on the season, so your photos turn out as dreamy as the evening light.

🚻 Bathrooms? Not Close By!
One final tip: there are no restrooms immediately near most of the photo locations inside the preserve. Plan accordingly, especially if you’re bringing young kids. The nearest bathrooms are:
- Inside the Southeast Regional Library
- Near the parking area — not near the pond or far trails
I always recommend a quick potty stop before we start the session so everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.

Final Thoughts: Is the Riparian Preserve Right for Your Family?

…then the Gilbert Riparian Preserve is an excellent choice! With a little prep and the right timing, it can be one of the most peaceful and picture-perfect spots for your next family photo session.
