Describe your photography journey.
“I’ve always enjoyed photography since I was a kid with a point and shoot. As a teen, my beloved dalmatian Pepper was my favorite subject. In college, my Dad gifted me my first SLR camera and I learned to develop my own film and prints in Photography 101. As a preschool teacher, I LOVED documenting my little students with my first digital camera. When I worked at a veterinary hospital, I couldn’t get enough of the adorable puppies and kittens I got to photograph for the hospital’s Facebook page. And then I had my own kids – and a whole new love for photography with my favorite models yet! Until this summer of 2018, I had been using my camera in auto mode. When I found the Cozy Clicks education courses online I decided I should finally take the plunge and learn to really use my camera to it’s full potential in manual mode. It’s been an exciting journey that continues!”
What (or who) was your inspiration for wanting to get into photography?
I’ve always been the creative type and enjoyed photography for both it’s artistic qualities and as a way to document important events, but having my own children pushed that need to pause time and preserve memories to the next level.
Where do you see yourself as a photographer in the next 5 years?
“It would be a dream to develop enough skill to go pro in the world of children and family portraiture.”
What type of photography do you enjoy the most and why?
“I love candids for their raw emotion. I am currently trying to learn posing but prompting reactions in such a way that I can capture that candid expression on cue.”
Tell us a little bit about the gear you use.
“I shoot with a Nikon D5600 and a 50mm 1.8 lens currently.”
Describe how you find inspiration in your work.
“My children’s current interests and nature are a big part of my inspiration, but also Pinterest. Too much Pinterest, ha ha.”
How would you describe your style?
“Bright and colorful? I’m still developing my style but I enjoy a lot of dimension and vivid colors.”
Do you have any funny or embarrassing moments to share about a time when you were out shooting?
“None yet!”
What is one piece of advice you would give to a brand new photographer?
“Take your time. Look at your scene. Step back to get everything in frame. Generally slow down. I struggle with this a lot and end up missing pieces of the puzzle in my rush.”
What tips do you have that would help others that are looking to advance their portrait photography skills?
“The way Emily explains the rule of thirds was a game changer for me. It can instantly boost your photos from boring to interesting!”
